DSM

DSM location in Delft-North
The DSM site (36 ha) is situated on the northern periphery of the city of Delft. The area is surrounded by residential areas in the south and west, the provincial trunk road in the west and agricultural land in the north. In addition, the site is intersected by the Rotterdam – The Hague railway line. The A4 and A13 motorways can be quickly reached via the adjacent provincial trunk road. On the eastern side, the area borders on the River Schie, providing water links to Leiden and Rotterdam.

This area is one of DSM's major locations in the Netherlands. The company has concentrated all its industrial biotechnological research, development and production activities on this site. About 1050 people are employed here, the majority being knowledge workers. DSM (or its predecessors such as Gist Brocades) has already been established at the site for 140 years and the Managing Board of Directors intends to extend this stay well into the future.

Future vision
Industrial biotechnology is an important growth market around the world and DSM wants to capitalize on this. For this reason, DSM is considering a major investment in an extensive new-build programme comprising advanced laboratories and related activities. This new strategy could involve opening up parts of the site to other biotechnological firms, thereby securing the partnerships and knowledge sharing with related companies which currently form such a vital and necessary part of knowledge development and innovation.

In addition, the existing on-site Bio Process Pilot Facility (BPF) for testing and upscaling processes will be renovated and expanded with new facilities which – as agreed with subsidy providers - must be made available to external companies.
If the Managing Board of Directors definitely embraces the policy described above, then the entire site will be designed and redeveloped with a view to creating a leading international location for companies in the industrial biotechnology cluster. The campus is not hidden behind greenery but has an outward-looking focus and constitutes an attractive location for companies engaging in research, development and small-scale production in industrial biotechnology and seeking synergy with DSM and each other.
